This graphic abstract explains an open-source method for finding covert procurement networks behind North Korea's nuclear programme. It is made for non-specialists — policy staff, students, the public — to show that freely available trade and corporate records, when read as a network, expose structure that no single record contains. Findings are investigative leads, never evidence of guilt.

Claude Opus 5 directed the build. Google Gemini 3 Pro Image and OpenAI GPT-5.4-image-2, called through OpenRouter, generated the painterly layers. The point cloud, panels and all type were rendered from source data in Python.

North Korea files no trade returns, so its imports are rebuilt by mirror statistics: what its partners declare exporting to it. Sensitive goods map to commodity codes across six stages of the fuel cycle, then split into two channels — declared straight to the DPRK, or into China, its gateway. Little direct trade against heavy gateway volume reads as transshipment. Sanctions listings act as weak labels on a relationship graph, and entities are scored by guilt by association. One reagent proves nothing; weight comes only when a whole process set arrives together. Procurement shows capability, not timing, so the method reads backward from a known date, and is validated on entities designated after the training cutoff.

A Researcher's Perspective연구자의 관점

The amber ridge is real: the model does separate known sanctioned entities from the rest. But I cannot tell how much of that is guilt and how much is enforcement history — sanctions are often applied along relationships investigators already knew. The generative tools made this picture legible; they did not make the finding. Every number here comes from public records and from code that anyone can re-run.
